If you live anywhere between the Mersey and the Yorkshire Dales, you have three airports within reach: Manchester (MAN), Liverpool John Lennon (LPL) and Leeds Bradford (LBA). The usual advice is "Manchester has everything, just go there." That is half true. This guide checks it against flights we actually saw depart all three airports between 16 September and 16 October 2026, using flight records from AeroDataBox. If a route is listed below, at least one passenger flight on it really left in that window.
That window catches the last weeks of the summer season, so it shows both the year-round backbone and the sun routes that are about to pause for winter. We explain how to tell them apart further down.
The short answer
In the 30 days to 16 October 2026 we counted scheduled passenger flights from:
| Manchester (MAN) | Liverpool (LPL) | Leeds Bradford (LBA) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Destinations | 177 | 64 | 60 |
| Countries | 59 | 25 | 21 |
| Flights in 30 days | 10,176 | 2,152 | 1,839 |
| Routes flown every day of the week | 101 | 17 | 19 |
| Furthest destination | Singapore, 6,808 miles (10,956 km) | Hurghada, 2,596 miles (4,178 km) | Larnaca, 2,146 miles (3,453 km) |
| Share of flights to sun destinations | 45% | 57% | 59% |
Distances are great-circle figures between airport coordinates (our calculation). "Sun destinations" means Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Malta, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Bulgaria.
Three conclusions fall out of that table:
- For long haul, it is Manchester or nothing. Neither Liverpool nor Leeds Bradford had a single route beyond Egypt and Cyprus in our window.
- For a beach week, the smaller airports overlap almost completely with Manchester. 57 of Liverpool's 64 destinations and 59 of Leeds Bradford's 60 were also served from Manchester.
- The smaller airports still have a few routes Manchester does not, mostly to Central and Eastern Europe, and on some shared routes they fly more often than Manchester does.
You can see each route network on a map: Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Bradford.
The busiest routes from each airport
Counts are flights we observed in the 30 days. Every route in these tables ran on all seven days of the week.
Manchester
| Destination | Flights in 30 days | Airlines seen |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin | 493 | Aer Lingus, Ryanair |
| Amsterdam | 339 | KLM, easyJet |
| Alicante | 300 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI |
| Paris Charles de Gaulle | 279 | Air France, easyJet |
| Palma de Mallorca | 244 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI |
| Barcelona | 219 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, Vueling |
| London Heathrow | 214 | British Airways |
| Antalya | 206 | Jet2, TUI, easyJet, SunExpress, Corendon, Freebird |
| Malaga | 201 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI |
| Tenerife South | 193 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI |
| Belfast International | 193 | easyJet, Ryanair |
Liverpool
| Destination | Flights in 30 days | Airlines seen |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin | 244 | Aer Lingus, Ryanair |
| Alicante | 159 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Belfast International | 137 | easyJet |
| Palma de Mallorca | 137 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Malaga | 124 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Faro | 111 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Isle of Man | 103 | easyJet, Loganair |
| Tenerife South | 77 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Barcelona | 56 | easyJet, Ryanair |
Leeds Bradford
| Destination | Flights in 30 days | Airlines seen |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin | 206 | Aer Lingus, Ryanair |
| Alicante | 150 | Jet2, Ryanair |
| Palma de Mallorca | 129 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI |
| Belfast City | 124 | Aer Lingus |
| Malaga | 107 | easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Amsterdam | 99 | KLM |
| Faro | 81 | Jet2, Ryanair |
| Tenerife South | 60 | Jet2, Ryanair |
The pattern is the same at all three: Dublin first, then the big Spanish and Portuguese leisure airports. Leeds Bradford is the most Jet2-shaped of the three (Jet2 appeared on 47 of its 60 routes, easyJet on just 5), while Liverpool leans on easyJet and Ryanair. Leeds Bradford's KLM link to Amsterdam, flown daily, is its one real hub connection.
What the trip to Manchester gets you
Of Manchester's 177 destinations, 103 were served from neither Liverpool nor Leeds Bradford. Together they accounted for 3,773 flights in the window. The ones that matter most:
| Type of trip | Only from Manchester (flights in 30 days) |
|---|---|
| North America | Toronto (43), Orlando (39), New York JFK (34), Atlanta (34), Las Vegas (17), Melbourne, Florida (13) |
| Gulf and Asia | Doha (103), Dubai (103), Abu Dhabi (69), Jeddah (34), Hong Kong (34), Singapore (34), Beijing (26), Islamabad (17), Shanghai (13) |
| Caribbean and Mexico | Cancun (30), Punta Cana (17), Montego Bay (13) |
| European hubs | London Heathrow (214), Copenhagen (159), Zurich (120), Istanbul (120), Munich (111), Frankfurt (103) |
| City breaks | Milan Malpensa (99), Geneva (86), Venice (81), Oslo (73), Athens (60), Reykjavik (56), Helsinki (51), Vienna (43) |
Two details are worth knowing before you book. The US flights we saw were almost all Virgin Atlantic, including New York JFK, plus a TUI service to Melbourne, Florida. And the Gulf routes on Qatar Airways and Emirates each ran about three or four times a day, which makes them the most reliable one-stop path from the North of England to Asia, Australia and Africa.
The cost of getting there:
- From Liverpool: Manchester Airport's own travel guide gives about 45 minutes and 35 miles (56 km) by car, a direct train of 1 hour 4 minutes from £6, and a coach of 55 minutes (Manchester Airport).
- From Leeds: the same guide gives about 1 hour 10 minutes by car and a direct train of 1 hour 17 minutes from £10 (Manchester Airport). TransPennine Express quotes about 1 hour 24 minutes on its fastest trains, and warns of fewer direct services on weekends and public holidays (TransPennine Express).
Those car times assume clear motorways. The M62 across the Pennines and the M60 around Manchester are not always clear, so leave a buffer of at least half an hour for an early flight.
Parking and drop-off. Long-stay prices at all three airports change by date and by how early you book, so we do not quote them; compare the pre-book price for your exact dates. Drop-off fees are fixed and worth knowing: Manchester charged £5.50 for five minutes in its drop-off zone as of July 2026 (Motoring Research, citing the RAC). Liverpool charged £6 for ten minutes (Deeside.com, citing the RAC). Leeds Bradford raised its fee to £8 for up to ten minutes from 2 March 2026 (The Stray Ferret). Manchester's zone is barrierless and must be paid online or by phone afterwards, so do not drive off and forget it: payment is due by midnight the following day (Manchester Airport).
The reverse: what only the smaller airports have
This is the surprising part. Liverpool had seven destinations we did not see from Manchester at all, all to France and Central and Eastern Europe:
| From Liverpool only | Flights in 30 days | Airline |
|---|---|---|
| Warsaw Modlin | 17 | Ryanair |
| Bergerac | 13 | Ryanair |
| Szczecin | 9 | Ryanair |
| Kosice | 9 | Ryanair |
| Kaunas | 9 | Ryanair |
| Sofia | 9 | Ryanair |
| Iasi | 4 | Wizz Air |
Leeds Bradford had one: Cluj-Napoca on Wizz Air (9 flights).
On some routes both airports share with Manchester, the smaller airport actually flew more often:
| Route | Smaller airport | Manchester |
|---|---|---|
| Leeds Bradford to Warsaw Chopin | 30 | 17 |
| Leeds Bradford to Bucharest | 30 | 21 |
| Leeds Bradford to Riga | 26 | 17 |
| Liverpool to Ireland West Knock | 39 | 21 |
| Liverpool to Jersey | 39 | 34 |
| Liverpool to Warsaw Chopin | 21 | 17 |
| Liverpool and Leeds Bradford to Wroclaw | 13 each | 9 |
Add Liverpool's Modlin flights to its Chopin flights and Liverpool had 38 flights to Warsaw against Manchester's 17. If your trip is to Poland, Romania, Lithuania or the Baltic states, check the smaller airport first.
Reading seasonality and frequency
A count over 30 days converts to a weekly frequency if you divide by about 4.3. So 9 flights is roughly twice a week, 13 is three times, 30 is about daily, and 100 or more is three or more flights a day.
Low counts in a mid-September to mid-October window usually mean a summer route in its final weeks. Manchester had 26 destinations with 9 flights or fewer, Liverpool 18 and Leeds Bradford 20. Many are Greek islands and smaller Mediterranean airports, such as Leeds Bradford to Skiathos and Thessaloniki (4 each) or Manchester to Mykonos (9). Expect those to pause over winter and return in spring.
The winter sun routes behave differently. Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Hurghada were flown several times a week or more in the window, and they are the kind of routes airlines keep through winter. Our data cannot confirm next season's schedule, so for anything outside the daily routes, check the airline's timetable for your dates.
Who should not bother making the drive
Be honest about what you are booking:
- A Spanish or Portuguese beach week from Merseyside or Yorkshire. Alicante, Palma, Malaga, Faro, Tenerife and Lanzarote were all flown daily from Liverpool and Leeds Bradford. Manchester offers more departure times, but a cheaper fare there rarely covers fuel, a longer drive and Manchester parking.
- Dublin and Belfast. All three airports run these many times a day.
- Turkey and Cyprus. Dalaman, Antalya, Bodrum, Paphos and Larnaca were served from all three. For the resorts, Manchester has more flights, not more destinations.
- Poland, Romania and the Baltics, as shown above.
Make the trip to Manchester for long haul, for a one-stop connection through a Gulf or European hub, and for city breaks the smaller two do not serve: Venice, Vienna, Copenhagen, Zurich, Geneva, Athens and Reykjavik.
Practical tips
Getting to Liverpool and Leeds Bradford. Liverpool's 500 bus runs every 30 minutes from about 4am to midnight between the terminal, Liverpool ONE bus station and Great Charlotte Street, a short walk from Lime Street station (Arriva). Leeds Bradford has no railway station of its own: you change to a bus or taxi, and the Transdev FLYER buses link the terminal with Leeds and Bradford and their main rail stations (Leeds Bradford Airport).
Size matters at security. Manchester handled about 32 million passengers in 2025, third in the UK (Wikipedia, citing CAA data). For a summer Saturday departure, allow more time there than you would at the smaller two.
Book connections on one ticket. If you are flying from Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam to connect onward with KLM, keep the whole trip on one booking so a late first flight is the airline's problem. Our guide to nonstop vs connecting flights explains when a self-built connection is worth the risk.
Search by airport, not by city. Compare all three airports for the same destination, plus the date either side. Our guide on how to find direct flights walks through the method, and if a flight from any of them runs late, UK261 and EU261 compensation rules may apply.
About this data
Flights were recorded by AeroDataBox and aggregated by us for departures from MAN, LPL and LBA between 16 September and 16 October 2026. "Flights observed" counts flights, not seats or passengers. We left out business jets, ad-hoc charters and aircraft repositioning flights (including UK domestic legs flown only by holiday airlines), which also removes the short hops between these three airports. Airline names are as reported, so a route can show both a parent airline and its subsidiary. Distances are great-circle calculations between airport coordinates. These three airports are among the few on our site with current observed routes; for most other airports our maps use an older archive (around 2014), so treat those as ideas and confirm with the airline.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly long haul from Liverpool or Leeds Bradford?
Not in the period we observed. The furthest route from Liverpool was Hurghada in Egypt, and from Leeds Bradford it was Larnaca in Cyprus. For North America, the Gulf or Asia, use Manchester, or connect via Amsterdam from Leeds Bradford or via Dublin from either airport.
Which North of England airport has flights to the United States?
Manchester. In our window we saw Virgin Atlantic to New York JFK, Atlanta, Orlando and Las Vegas, and TUI to Melbourne, Florida. Toronto was flown by Air Canada and Air Transat.
Is it worth driving from Leeds to Manchester Airport for a beach holiday?
Usually not for Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands or Turkey, which Leeds Bradford served daily or several times a week. It is worth it for long haul, for Gulf connections, and for European cities that Leeds Bradford does not serve.
How long does the train from Liverpool or Leeds to Manchester Airport take?
Manchester Airport's guide lists a direct train of about 1 hour 4 minutes from Liverpool and 1 hour 17 minutes from Leeds. TransPennine Express quotes about 1 hour 24 minutes from Leeds on its fastest trains.
